blocking: glints part 2

Gints Part 1 went over the pulsing flare to help to draw the eye. Part 2 of this study will go over how sweeping glints can reinforce blocking for clarity. But what is are sweeping glints? The are flares that move either when a reflective object or camera moves creating a traveling flare. A Honda ad example:

Let’s see how they can be used intentionally to assist in blocking. In the example below, the sweeping glints direction the eye up the sword, to the torso of the robot, up to its head. This is helpful because the robot is a complex character, the glints assist the eye to constantly keep the eye moving up.



The logo sequence for Universal also uses sweeping glints to keep the eye moving - this is common for animated text sequences in Western cultures: the sweeping glints move screen right to make sure the text is read:



The final example of how this can help with blocking is in The Notebook. Notice how the glint moves across the car door to direct the eye to the main character right as she turns around:
