Blocking: Spielberg Study Part 2
After watching more of Spielberg's work both for the first time and revisiting films I've seen many times, I noticed a new concept for me that I call "Stacking the Focal Points". This involves replacing or revealing a focal point through layering. This is eye direction at its simplest because the viewer's eyes are in the same place when the next focal point is revealed all within the same shot.
The focal point stacking on top of the previous one:
The next focal point revealed behind Indy and his horse moving out of frame:
And the previous focal point of the sliding guard moving behind our new focal point of the smiling boy:
In Hook, this shot shows Toodles revealing action behind him, and moving back over them to become the focal point:
This was a fascinating study for me because this concept is foundation of editing when one shot cuts to another with focal points roughly in the same position. It's great to see that the same can be achieved without a cut. Happy studying!
