Coloring: Fleming’s Color Hooking

In the study, I wanted to chip away at color concepts that I have yet to get a grasp on or articulate. Looking at posters from Hugh Fleming, I noticed a pattern with his color use related to how he layers different groupings of color. For example, In the Andor poster below, the purple bottom grouping of elements layers onto of the orange grouping. And the orange grouping, in turn, layers over the purple grouping.

The same concept is at play in Fleming’s Indiana Jones Last Crusade poster: the blue/cool color grouping layers over the warm grouping, while the warm grouping pokes out and layers on the cool grouping.

BREAKDOWN

I decided to call this concept “color-hooking”. Providing a way to blend between two color groupings without clear transitions.
