scale: interior weather

This study was one of the most surprising scale posts yet. I wanted to do more research into what makes a large space feel large, and I came across large spaces having their own weather:

Suspended on a thin rope, engulfed in cloud, a tiny figure is dwarfed by the sheer size on a monumental scale of Cloud Ladder Hall. The beam of light cast by a head torch pierces the fog yet illuminates nothing. This naturally formed room is so large it has its own weather system going.

The same phenomenon can be found at NASA’s VAB:

The VAB is so large, in fact, that it has its own weather. On humid days, rain clouds can form below the ceiling, requiring about 10,000 tons of air conditioning equipment to control the moisture.

The large spaceship in Independence Day has it’s own fog, making the space feel grand and endless:

Journey to the Center of the Earth takes this concept and adds the surreal element of an interior sunset, but does have the realism of a cloud system underground.

Wind is weather that can also help an interior feel as big as it is - like in The Empire Strikes Back:
