Terpning: Positive And Negative Part 1
In this study, I wanted to expand on the concept of negative and positive being balanced out in Struzan’s work HERE as a “Positive/Negative“ strategy.
Terpning does something similar to Struzan, but seems to mostly apply the concept laterally. In the example below, there is a massing of elements. From right, elements “cut into” the composition, bringing in negative space behind the horse riders. And this results in a “pushing out” of the city on the right”.
The same “positive/negative” balancing is happening with the top left city as the positive space and the top right racing flag as the negative space:
